ROBIN BARTELS Obituary

Robin A. (nee Shepley) Bartels passed away May 31, 2017. She was married to Douglas Bartels for 20 years and a dear friend to many in the Lake Zurich area. Robin was born in 1956 in Chicago to Duane A. F. and Bernadine Shepley. She spent most of her early years growing up with her four siblings in Palatine and was a proud graduate of William Fremd High School. After moving to Lake Zurich, she devoted much of her time to community work. She was a member of the Lake Zurich Lions Club since 1985 and served as president and committee chairperson, receiving the Melvin Jones Fellowship and Foundation Fellow awards. She was active in the Lions Club Alpine Festival, Lake Zurich Park District's Haunted House and annual Chili Cook-Off. Robin also worked for many years as a special education teacher assistant at London Middle School in Wheeling. Robin will be fondly remembered as a loving aunt and for her lively personality, wonderful way with children, Wisconsin River canoe trip dinners, unflagging devotion to the Bears and Cubs, and the many community events she helped make successful. In addition to her husband Doug, she is survived by her mother Bernadine, siblings Duane (Marla) Shepley, Mark (Katherine) Shepley, Kim (Chuck) Wegrzyn, Todd Shepley, nephews Benjamin (Jessica) Shepley, Christopher (Elizabeth France) Wegrzyn, John (Kimberly Goy) Shepley, Jeremy (Elizabeth) Wegrzyn , Mark (Ellen) Shepley, nieces Tara (Graham) Goy, Allison (Donnie) O'Neill, Katherine (Benjamin) Blunt, Elise Shepley, and Michelle Shepley, stepdaughters Lora (Joseph) Garceau, Lisa (Todd) Buck, and their children Lorena and Jayne Garceau, Jericho, Hannah, Ezekiel, and Elijah Buck. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Lake Zurich on Saturday June 10, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. Visitation begins at 9:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Robin's memory to the Special Olympics, 1133 19th Street, N.W., Washington, D.C., U.S. 20036, or visit www.specialolympics.org or charity of choice.
